Denmark Delegation: Progressive Energy Landscapes Parliamentary Visit to Copenhagen

cphg

A delegation of a Parliamentarians, led by the PRASEG Chair Polly Billington MP, will embark on a three-day study visit to Copenhagen. This visit will provide an opportunity to explore Denmark’s leadership in renewable energy, grid infrastructure, and green industrial strategy.

The Embassy of Denmark in London and their counterparts in Copenhagen, in collaboration with PRASEG, are delivering the programme and providing in-country logistical support. The delegation will engage with Danish policymakers, industry leaders, and researchers to gain insights into best practices that can inform UK energy policy.

Objectives of the Visit:

Learn from Danish Energy Policies Denmark is a global leader in renewable energy integration. The delegation will learn from the successes and challenges of how Denmark has powered through with an ambitious energy transition plan, from offshore workforce redeployment to sustainable energy-intensive data centres, to provide lessons for the UK’s energy transition. The trip will explore Denmark’s innovative approach to integrated energy systems, including district heating, commitment to 100% waste biomass feed and deploying offshore wind at scale. Parliamentarians from the UK will be introduced to the Danish polices that have enabled the transition as well as the risks and limitations to supply chain security and market forces arising due to a changing global energy outlook.

Understand Workforce Transition and Skills Development The UK’s transition to net zero is hampered by a shortage of skilled workers and challenges in workforce adaptation. This visit will review Denmark’s vocational training and certification schemes, strategies for managing workforce transition, and compare approaches for engaging with a unionised workforce. As the UK moves from traditional energy sectors to green energy industries, Parliamentarians must ensure a just transition for workforce retraining and redeployment.

Study Public Engagement Strategies Public support is crucial for the successful rollout of renewable projects critical for the decarbonisation agenda, such as district heating pipelines, transmission infrastructure and wind farms. Denmark’s engagement with communities and maintaining public trust can be a learning theme for UK Parliamentarians. By discussing strategies for tracking and responding to public attitudes towards climate change and decarbonisation efforts, this dialogue can provide transferable lessons for the UK.

Strengthen Cross-Channel Collaboration Global challenges to decarbonise energy has reset the international power balance. Alliances in energy generation and decarbonisation, such as cross-Channel cooperation on Viking II, cements lasting transcontinental partnerships. UK and Danish Parliamentarians will have the forum to discuss the strengths of collaboration to solve key risks to successfully implementing Net Zero strategies such as public support for decarbonisation, and supply chain constraints to enable essential grid expansion. The cross-party delegation will strengthen inter-Parliamentary cooperation for a shared mission to be Europe’s leaders in decarbonised energy.
